From the Publisher
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support over the past year. It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year since I became publisher and editor at River Valley News. Together with our talented graphic designer, Cindy Price and veteran account executive, Ian Lambert, we’ve tried to produce the best community newspaper and webpage we can. Judging by the positive feedback and comments we’ve received, I feel we’ve done a pretty good job for our first year. But more can be done to better serve the needs of our readers and advertisers and we plan to follow through with that in 2010.
First and foremost, we believe that ‘content is king’. We feel to be of any value, our publication has to be informative and interesting and much more than just an advertising supplement. That’s why every issue has original news, features and stories about events and people in the local area we serve, from West Saint John through Grand Bay-Westfield to Gagetown and over to Welsford and Hoyt. If it’s not about something happening in the area, written by someone from the area or affecting people living here, it doesn’t get in the paper. The term being used these days for what we do is ‘hyperlocal’ journalism. Other media outlets cover the greater Saint John area, the province and national news. We don’t have to. Our job, as we say on our masthead, is to inform, connect and celebrate this place where we live because if we don’t, these stories won’t be told. We want a newspaper that people keep and read from cover to cover because it contains meaningful local content and well produced ads that jump out from the page.
River Valley News is already delivered by mail to every home and business in the E5K postal code, including all of Grand Bay-Westfield, upriver to just this side of Brown’s Flat and over to Weslford and Clarendon. In the new year we’re increasing our mail distribution to include the River Road area of Saint John. We’re looking at adding additional areas on the west side and upriver over the course of the year. And the paper will still be available for pick up at local stores in West Saint John, Grand Bay-Westfield and upriver.
The website continues to grow with more visitors and email subscribers all the time. If you haven’t done so already I invite you to sign up and you’ll receive the latest news from the community directly to your email. We’ll be making some changes to rivervalleynews.ca, giving it a cleaner look and allowing for more audio and video on the site. That’s all coming in 2010 and we’ll keep you posted on developments.
